This video shows how you can connect Sharepoint to SQL server for example. It takes about 5 minutes.

They show that you can get a customer information chart, for example from SQL server right into Sharepoint. The chart is itself customized to the technical person’s needs with customer name, YTD revenue, phone, etc. If you need to update the information in the chart, you can do so using the tool and sharepoint is updated as well almost instantaneously.
The video also shows that you can hook outlook for example to the same piece of business data in the chart.
