How to Buy SharePoint 2010

The product suite will actually support intranet, extranet, and internet applications from 1 platform. How can you determine what licensing you will need? Well the cost will be determined by three things: which features are needed for your business, how the product will be deployed in your environment, and where the system will be hosted.

Intranet sites are licensed using a Server/CAL model. You will need Sharepoint Server 2010 for running each instance of the software. CALs will be required for each team member accessing the Sharepoint server. Extranet sites however, are licensed using a server-only model, hence no CALs are required.

If you are interested in Sharepoint and need an “expert opinion” on what to do, shoot me an email at EasySharepoint@gmail.com. Let me know your environment and I would be more than happy to make a recommendation.

Here are the different scenarios:

Sharepoint Server 2010: Intranet Scenario

1. Client Access License (CAL)

This license will be able to provide your business the following capabilities:

-Search – be able to find people and relevant documents for your project
-Communities – an integrated platform that allows for collaboration
-Content Management – embedded ECM
-Sites – a single infrastructure to manage all your business sites

2. Enterprise Class Access License

This is an additive license on the other hand will allow the user to have access to the full range of capabilities from Sharepoint 2010.

-Search- Includes FAST search
-Content – Enterprise content management functionality
-Composites – Includes Access Services and InfoPath Services
-Insights – Business Intelligence capabilities including PerformancePoint Services, Excel, and Visio

Sharepoint Server 2010 Extranet sceanarios:

1. Sharepoint Server 2010 – Standard

This is designed for both small and mid-sized companies. Deployment of this license is limited to a single domain and related subdomains, i.e. Microsoft.com and subdomains such as sharepoint.microsoft.com.

2. Sharepoint Server 2010 – Enterprise

This server license will actually include the rights to FAST Search for use in extranet scenarios. You can either deploy a single server license as a Sharepoint server or as a FAST search server, but you can’t do both at the same time.
